Salo case will go to trial

pornographic gay bookstore, out of business. The store was charged just before the Issue 3 trial began.
Salo is set in World War II Italy, and has scenes where Fascist rulers brutalize young men. It was shown in art and foreign-film theaters when it was released in 1975.
Naomi Greene, professor of film studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara said that, while the film certainly has disturbing scenes, "it is, in fact, a highly cerebral and philosophical film which condemns the abuses of power, whether such abuses be of a political, an economic, or a social nature. Given the rise of neo-Fascist groups in Europe--and the emergence of an intolerant religious right in the United States its message, alas, continues to be a timely one."
Sgt. Gary Lee of the Cincinnati Police vice unit said in his report that "The film appears to be foreign... It represented some pretty explicit sexual activity, tortuous activity." Lee would not discuss the case; nor would city safety director Bill Gustavson.
The NCAC and ACLU together have recruited museums, film societies, scholars, critics, and directors, to join in a friend-ofthe-court brief about the literary, artistic, and political value of the film.
Father Jerome Pryor, S.J., who teaches film in Cincinnati as a Xavier University professor of humanities, said that while the film was controversial and difficult to watch, it is neither obscene nor immoral.
Judge Mallory rejected a motion to dismiss based on a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that works with political and artistic merit cannot be prosecuted as obscene.
Ohio Human Rights Bar Association (The Statewide Gay and Lesbian Bar Association) P.O. Box 10655, Columbus, OH 43201 (614) 265-7530
The Ohio Human Rights Bar Association (OHRBA) has forwarded questionnaires to all individuals seeking an elected judicial position in Cuyahoga County or on the Ohio Supreme Court. The questionnaires sought the views of the candidates on matters affecting the Gay and Lesbian Community. Candidates were evaluated based upon their experience, integrity, temperament, professional competence, and their response to the matters raised in the questionnaire. Based upon those criteria, OHRBA makes the following recommendations.
Candidates not listed failed to respond to the questionnaire.
Education act passed
Continued from page 1 him from speaking on the record.
"Certainly under a Republican administration a lot of mischief could be made with this. But the most important thing to us is that we have in there that is no private right of action under this provision. So the Christian Coalition can't go suing school districts."
A feared debate on sexual issues never materialized on the floor of the House. Republicans chose to make their stand on school prayer. Their effort failed and the conference
report was adopted, September 30, by a vote of 262 to 132.
It then went to the Senate. Many thought the less restrictive rules of that body and Jesse Helms' tenacious gay-bashing would result in a filibuster to kill the bill. Supporters were reasonably confident they had the 60 votes necessary to cut off debate, but they are less certain they had the time to do so under the rules. Evidently Helms was bluffing. The Senate passed ESEA, 77 to 20, on October 5.
